American higher education is flexible. Undergraduate degrees (bachelor's) take about four years, with a broad first two years of general education followed by a major. USA Student Visa Requirements For International Students
Most international students study on an F-1 visa. You must be admitted to a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), receive a Form I-20, and prove you can pay for your studies and living costs without working illegally. You must also show that you intend to leave the USA when your studies end, or otherwise comply with the terms of your status.
When to apply for a US student visa
You can apply for an F-1 visa up to 365 days before the programme start date shown on your I-20, but you can only enter the USA up to 30 days before it starts. Appointment waits in Dhaka can be long, particularly between May and August, so apply as soon as you have your I-20.

Interview and screening

New rules for 2026
DHS finalised a rule that ends "duration of status" for F-1 students, effective 15 September 2026. Students are admitted for a fixed period based on the programme end date on their I-20, up to four years, plus a short grace period, and must apply for an extension if they need more time. Some Bangladeshi banks offer education loans, and many US universities need proof of funds for the first year through a sponsor letter, bank statements or loan sanction letters. Provide clean, traceable documents and explain any large deposits.
Part-Time Job Options In USA
F-1 students can work on campus for up to 20 hours a week during term and full time during breaks. Off-campus work is generally not allowed in the first academic year and then only through authorised programmes such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Working without authorisation can end your status.
Post-Study Work Opportunities In USA
- OPT (Optional Practical Training): up to 12 months of work related to your degree after graduation.
- STEM OPT extension: an additional 24 months for eligible STEM degrees at employers enrolled in E-Verify.
- H-1B: employers can sponsor skilled workers, but a selection process applies and a USD 100,000 fee now applies to certain new H-1B petitions filed for workers outside the USA. Change of status for students already in the USA is treated differently, so check current guidance.
